OJAI : City Criticizes Study for Weldon Landfill
- Share via
The city of Ojai, a primary opponent of the proposed Weldon Canyon landfill, has maintained in a letter to the county that an environmental study of the proposed dump is inadequate because it is based on outdated information.
The landfill would be located north of Ventura near Casitas Springs.
Ojai’s 28-page letter was sent Friday to the Ventura County planning division for distribution to members of the Environmental Report Review Committee, which is holding a public hearing May 29 on the environmental report.
City officials are requesting that the county reject the document, which would at least delay construction of the landfill. Ojai insists that the Weldon Canyon report is based on outdated information, fails to evaluate significant environmental impacts, does not address alternatives, incorrectly assumes the availability of water and uses best-case assumptions when worst-case assumptions are called for by state law.
The landfill is proposed by Waste Management Inc. and would replace the Bailard Landfill, which is scheduled to close in late 1993.
