COUNTYWIDE : School Districts to Buy Natural Gas
- Share via
School districts in Ventura County will band together to buy natural gas in an attempt to reduce spending, following the leads of county agencies and school districts throughout the state, an official said Tuesday.
The county districts were granted permission last year by the Public Utilities Commission to stop buying gas from Southern California Gas Co. and start getting it from outside vendors, Bob Smith of the county superintendent’s office said.
Buying jointly could save the districts up to $1,000 a year, Smith said.
“Right now, we’re looking anywhere we can to save money,” he said.
More than half of the county school districts are planning to participate in the program, a three-year pilot project that district officials hope will lead to collective buying of water, electricity, electronic equipment and telephone services, he said.
The first shipment of gas will be delivered Aug. 1.
