LAGUNA BEACH : Suspected Drunk Driver Is Injured

A 50-year-old man, who police suspect of driving while drunk, was critically injured Thursday when he lost control of his car and skidded into an oncoming pickup.
John Terrence Mechling of Laguna Beach was in critical condition Thursday at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo.
Sgt. Don Barney said Mechling was heading east on Laguna Canyon Road at 7:15 a.m. when he lost control of his car and drifted onto the road’s shoulder. The vehicle jerked back onto the road and collided with a pickup driven by Edward Jackman, Barney said.
Jackman, of El Toro, also was taken to Mission Hospital, where he was treated for chest pains, police said.
Mechling was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving, Barney said.
