World IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Economist Says His Peace Trip Cost Job

A Treasury Department economist who went on a personal “peace mission” to Iraq and condemned the U.S. government in a Baghdad interview during the Persian Gulf War said he has been fired from his $70,000-a-year job. Anthony Lawrence said he was given a discharge memo that cited a delinquent filing of his 1989 income tax return, which he said was cleared up. “I have no doubt about the real reason,” he said.
