European Community leaders said they will allow member states to renew sports contacts with South Africa because “important progress” has been made in abolishing apartheid.
“Where sports are clearly integrated in South Africa, then that sport should be readmitted to the international game,” British Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd said.
Said Bhadra Ranchod, South Africa’s envoy to the European Community: “Full credit has been given for the changes currently taking place.”
