Police Now Say Bishop May Have Been Hit by Car

Police said Friday that they suspect that a Maronite Catholic bishop was struck by a car, not attacked, as he walked through Bel-Air Monday evening.
The Most Rev. John Chedid, pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Lebanon-St. Peter church and the spiritual leader of Maronite Christians in the United States, was knocked unconscious about 8:30 p.m. Monday as he walked along Bellagio Road near his home. He remained at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, under treatment for a broken nose, broken ribs, damage to his left eye and a broken leg.
Some of Chedid’s associates initially suggested that the 68-year-old bishop may have been the victim of a hate crime because he was wearing his robe and clerical collar and was not robbed. Maronite Christians are a significant political force in Lebanon and have been involved in that nation’s violence.
