While voicing outrage at Sen. Jesse Helms’ (R-N.C.) release of findings on the Keating Five compiled by the Senate Ethics Committee, Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) employs that old adage “a strong offense is the best defense” (front page, Aug. 6).
His characterization of Helms as a “radical right winger,” while true, is laughable coming from a “radical left winger.” A clear case of the pot calling the kettle black, to use another old aphorism.
Dominated by liberals, the Ethics Committee has been sitting on incriminating evidence for 18 months, apparently in the vain hope that Cranston’s malodorous association with Lincoln Savings & Loan will fade from the public’s memory.
No wonder that Jesse Helms got frustrated.
