WORLD IN BRIEF : MIDDLE EAST : Belgians, Swiss Bid to Host Conference

Belgium and Switzerland offered to host the Middle East peace conference that the superpowers hope can be held in October. Belgian Foreign Minister Mark Eyskens said that by holding the conference in Brussels--headquarters of many European Community institutions--the EC would be fulfilling its wish to play a strong role. Switzerland’s deputy foreign minister, Klaus Jacobi, told a news conference that his country has taken preliminary steps to make the city of Bern available for the conference.
