Recognition for Slovenia, Croatia
In our elation over the events in the Soviet Union, we should not forget the desperate struggle for independence of the Croatian people. Communist and Stalinist Serbia has invaded Croatia with the support of the Yugoslav army. Hundreds of Croatians have been killed or wounded, villages and towns have been bombed by the Yugoslav air force and tens of thousands of people in Croatia have fled their homes.
The Croatian people and their democratically elected government deserve independence as much as any republic of the Soviet Union. They also deserve recognition by and support of the United States government. Only the recognition of Croatia will stop the bloodshed, and lead to real negotiations for a peaceful settlement of the war between Croatia and Serbia.
