ROSSINI: Arias. Agnes Baltsa, mezzo-soprano; Vienna Symphony, Ion Marin, conducting. Sony (SK 45964). The apparent deterioration of Baltsa’s once impressive mezzo-soprano is sad. The register breaks are alarming, the sound patchy and gray. Most of the time she aspirates to facilitate articulation. The “Maometto” aria is a particular trial. A pity too, for she has a real feeling for the Rossini line and an intelligent comprehension of words and characterization. Marin’s conducting is of little help to a singer who needs all she can get. Characteristically bright Sony sound.
