A 16-year-old boy was killed in a drive-by shooting in Golden Hill Friday night in what police believe was a gang-related incident.
Oscar Chavez was shot at 11:17 p.m. in the 2600 block of Russ Street and taken by paramedics to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he died on the operating table at 5:47 a.m. Saturday, said a San Diego Police spokesman.
Police were summoned to the area after neighbors reported hearing shots. Chavez was found lying on the ground with bullet wounds in his legs and chest. The gang unit of the San Diego Police Department is continuing to investigate.
Chavez, whose address was unknown, was a student at the Downtown Summit Continuation School, said a spokesman for the San Diego County Medical Examiner.
