High School Basketball Tournament Expands

The second Above the Rim Hoopwear Prep Classic will expand to 26 teams this season and will be played Dec. 26-31 at Torrey Pines High and Peterson Gym.
Seven teams from San Diego, nine states and Australia will be represented in the tournament.
Among the local teams competing are Morse, Lincoln, Carlsbad, University of San Diego High, Valhalla, El Camino and Torrey Pines.
Other California teams competing are Red Bluff, South Lake Tahoe, Oakland Bishop O’Dowd, Los Alamitos, Santa Ana Mater Dei, Pasadena Muir and Los Angeles Fremont.
Others participating are Buffalo (N.Y.) Frontier, Seattle Cascade, Brooklyn (N.Y.) Bishop Ford Central, Brooklyn (N.Y.) Lincoln, Cleveland St. Joseph, South Salem (Ore.), Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill, Mercer Island (Wash.), Las Vegas Western, Salt Lake City (Utah) Alta, and Charlotte (N.C.) Baptist.
A team from Queensland, Australia will also compete in the double-elimination tournament. It begins Dec. 26 at Torrey Pines with games played simultaneously at Peterson Gym Dec. 27-30. The finals are at Peterson Gym on Dec. 31.
Three state champions will compete, as well as one--Oak Hill--that has six all-Americans.

CROSS-COUNTRY
San Diego State had three of the top five finishers in a tri-meet with USD and Loyola Marymount, but did not have five runners and therefore could not win the team competition as USD beat LMU, 31-55.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
San Diego State shut out Texas Christian, 2-0, in its opening game of the St. Mary’s Fall Classic in Moraga. Nicole Roche and Stacey Hoshimaya scored for SDSU (2-1). TCU fell to 1-2.
WATER POLO
UC San Diego lost two of three matches in the UC Irvine water polo tournament. The Tritons fell to Stanford, 14-3 and UC Santa Barbara, 10-8, before defeating Fresno State, 11-8. UC San Diego faces UC Riverside at 11:40 a.m. today at Corona del Mar High School.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Northern Arizona took two victories in the second day of the Volley World/USD Invitational to finish in first place with a 3-0 record. USD won two matches during the day and finished second at 2-1.
Angel Leah, a junior outside hitter for NAU and who prepped at Morse, was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
USD is 8-4 overall.
