Newport Harbor advances to semifinals--Maureen McLaren had 12 kills and Tara Kroesch had eight for Newport Harbor, which upset Mira Costa, the top-ranked team in the Southern Section 5-A Division, 15-8, 15-13, to advance to the championship bracket. The Sailors face St. Joseph at 11 a.m. today in one semifinal at Redondo Union High School. Torrey Pines, the top-ranked 5-A team in the state poll, is in the semifinal of the upper bracket. The championship game is at 5 p.m.
At the Canyon Water Polo Tournament:
Dana Hills, El Toro, and Trabuco Hills advance--Alan Herrmann scored eight goals to lead Dana Hills to an 11-4 second-round victory over Canyon, sending the Dolphins to the winners’ bracket with El Toro and Trabuco Hills.
In nonleague water polo:
Pacifica 9, Santa Ana 7--Nelson Ebb scored two goals in overtime and McDonald Lang scored another for Pacifica. Santa Ana’s Juan Gonzalez forced the overtime when he tied the game, 6-6, with 41 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
At the La Serna water polo tournament:
Alhambra 11, La Habra 10--The Highlanders (9-1) suffered their first loss despite four goals each from Richard Puiselich and Scott Seminoff.
La Habra 11, Agoura 9--La Habra won in the consolation round behind three goals from Scott Seminoff.
