Board Candidate Withdraws

Helen M. Spencer, one of 16 candidates for the two open seats on the Ventura Unified School District board, said Friday that she has withdrawn from the race.
Spencer, 58, a retired teacher and an income tax preparer, said she decided not to seek a board position in the Nov. 5 election for personal reasons, including a lack of time to devote to board member duties.
Spencer said she would instead support the two candidates endorsed by the Ventura Chamber of Commerce, family counselor and businesswoman Judy Alexandre and bank manager Robert J. Alviani.
Spencer said she will continue to serve on a committee on curriculum, made up of community members.
An official at the Ventura city clerk’s office said Spencer’s name will still appear on the ballot in November.
