Shawon Dunston, who could have filed for free agency after the season, agreed to a $12-million, four-year contract with the Chicago Cubs.
The 28-year-old infielder is batting .260 with 12 home runs, 50 runs batted in and 21 stolen bases. Dunston, who is making $2.1 million this season, will get a $1.5-million signing bonus.
Former Dodger Davey Lopes was fired by Texas Manager Bobby Valentine after nearly four years as a coach for the Rangers.
Neither Lopes nor Valentine would specify reasons for the firing, although there had been reports that they had argued recently. Lopes helped position the Ranger defense and also was a base-running instructor.
Bobby Brown, president of the American League, reduced the three-game suspension of Carlos Martinez of the Cleveland Indians to two games. Martinez was suspended for charging the mound after he was hit by a pitch by Kansas City’s Kevin Appier on Aug. 2.
