COUNTY TENNIS ROUNDUP : San Clemente’s Parks Helps U.S. Wheelchair Team Advance

Brad Parks of San Clemente teamed with Rick Slaughter of Nashville, Tenn., to help the top-seeded United States team defeat Canada, 3-0, Friday in the quarterfinals of the World Team Cup wheelchair tennis tournament at the Racquet Club of Irvine.
Parks and Slaughter defeated Phil Koester and Phil Rowe, 6-1, 6-0, in doubles competition. In singles play, Randy Snow of Austin, Tex., defeated Paul Johnson, 6-1, 6-2, and Jim Black of Long Beach defeated Peter Cameron, 6-1, 6-0.
The U.S. team, which received a first-round bye, will play third-seeded Australia in today’s semifinals beginning at 1 p.m. Germany, which reached the semifinals with a 2-1 victory over Sweden, will play No. 2 France, a 3-0 winner over Austria.
In women’s semifinal play today, the second-seeded U.S. team will play Australia, a 2-1 quarterfinal winner over Austria, at 9 a.m. Israel, a 2-1 winner over Germany, will play No. 1-seeded Holland, which defeated France, 3-0.
Doris Clark of Laguna Beach advanced to the semifinals of the Women’s National 65 Hardcourt Championships with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Piyachart Hussey of Laguna Hills Friday at Leisure World in Laguna Hills.
Newport Beach’s Cathie Hall lost to Phyllis Adler of Toluca Lake in another quarterfinal, 6-0, 5-7, 6-1. In other quarterfinals, June Gay of Fort Myers, Fla., defeated Margaret Wickham of Diamond Springs, 6-1, 6-0, and Elaine Mason of Fresno beat Tillie Clasnic of Bellevue, Wash., 7-6, 6-3.
In the 75s quarterfinals, Dodo Cheney of Santa Monica defeated Melanie McAller of Ocala, Fla., 6-1, 6-1, to advance. Lish Dudley of Los Angeles lost to Margaret Gisolo of Tempe, Ariz., 6-2, 6-2, in another quarterfinal.
