Female Officers

It is a pure stroke of genius on the part of Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky, the City Council and the Christopher and the Police commissions (“Plan Unveiled to Attain Gender Balance in LAPD,” Metro, Sept. 25). Theirs is a brilliant decision to increase the percentage of female officers for the Los Angeles Police Department, with the sincere hope that more women officers will lead to a kinder and gentler force.
However, to keep the good guys and bad guys even, the City Council and Police Commission should also be encouraging the criminals, felons, drug dealers, drive-by shooters, etc., to recruit more women into their gangs too. Then perhaps a larger female criminal element, percentagewise, will persuade the gang members to turn over a new leaf and be kinder and gentler to their victims.
