ANAHEIM — Ryan Irving ran for a three-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to lead Katella to a 20-13 nonleague victory over Western Friday at Handel Stadium.
The Knights (2-3), scored on their first two possessions to take a 14-0 lead. Gary Hennessey’s six-yard run capped a five-play, 68-yard drive to open the game. Then with 2 minute 37 seconds left in the first quarter, quarterback Orlando Gonzalez scored on a one-yard run to give Katella a 14-0 lead.
Western (0-5) came back behind running back Shane Foss. Midway through the second quarter, the 210-pound senior made the score 14-7 with a 44-yard touchdown burst through the middle of the Katella line. Foss finished the game with 136 yards in 12 carries.
The Pioneers made the score 14-13 when Jason Diaz caught a 43-yard scoring pass from Errick Bryan with 8:12 to play in the third quarter. Katella’s Jason Siegrist prevented Western from tying the score, however, when he blocked the PAT attempt.
