In response to “The Maids of Hong Kong: A Journey of Loneliness, Humiliation,” World Report, Oct. 1:
One of the Philippine government’s immediate priorities should be the protection of Filipino contract workers from being mistreated abroad. If the Philippines is to participate in the global labor market, its government officials must set new policies that will curb the participation of sleazy labor brokers from taking advantage of hard-working Filipinos.
Its Labor Department should limit the number of contract workers leaving the country and should actively disseminate information to the Filipino labor force about legitimate recruiting agencies.
