THE NEW FACE OF L.A.

For six years, I have taught English composition at Cal State L.A. Quarter after academic quarter, I have worked with students from scores of countries. I’ve never ceased to be amazed by how much the desire to communicate can unify so disparate an assemblage of human beings. In my classes, which require a lot of collaborative learning, I have seen time and again how students from the Third World--and yes, even from Western Europe--can celebrate their differences even as they seek a common language of expression.
A Basin of Babel? I think otherwise.
