Are the Umbrellas Worth $26 Million?

The $26 million spent on Christo’s 3,100 umbrellas is an obscene waste of money.
This money is desperately needed to help our hungry, the homeless, the mentally ill and other similar causes. According to an advertisement run by the Los Angeles Mission (L.A. Times, Oct. 9), they (and presumably other similar nonprofit organizations) can feed and shelter 500 needy people at a cost of $1,020 per day. At that rate, $26 million could feed and shelter nearly 70,000 people for half a year.
One wonders what kind of person or organization donates funds for such monstrous displays of indifference and waste in the name of “art.”
