WAC ROUNDUP : BYU Downs Hawaii to Stay Unbeaten in League

Ty Detmer threw for three touchdowns, and freshman Jamal Willis rushed for two more Saturday in Brigham Young’s 35-18 victory over Hawaii at Provo, Utah.

Detmer, the 1990 Heisman Trophy winner, completed 14 of 20 passes for 225 yards. Willis racked up 82 yards while scoring on a 1-yard plunge and a 44-yard scamper for the Cougars (4-3, 3-0).

The Rainbow Warriors (3-4, 2-3) committed two turnovers which BYU converted into touchdowns and three others which cost them scoring chances.

BYU scored its first touchdown on a 21-yard pass from Detmer to Nati Valdez in the first quarter after Hawaii punter Winston Haynes mishandled a low snap.

BYU got another touchdown in the third quarter after Shad Hansen recovered a fumble by Hawaii’s Michael Carter at the Rainbow 14. Detmer passed seven yards to Eric Drage for that score. BYU’s other touchdown came on a one-yard pass from Detmer to Matt Zundel.

Hawaii scored on a one-yard keeper by Carter and Jason Elam’s 46-yard field goal, both in the second quarter. Ivin Jasper added a 34-yard scoring pass to Darrick Branch in the fourth quarter. Garrett Awai’s two-point conversion run accounted for Hawaii’s final points.

Hawaii got inside BYU’s 20 three other times but fell prey to a fumble and two interceptions.

The Rainbows trailed just 7-0 when Carter fumbled at the BYU 2 in the first quarter. The Cougars then marched 98 yards for Zundel’s touchdown.

Ervin Lee intercepted a pass by Carter in the end zone near the end of the second quarter. Derwin Gray did the same thing late in the third period.
