Back to Budapest

Colman Andrew’s story on Budapest certainly captures the essence, but didn’t mention that for many years the entire facade of the New York-Hungaria has been covered with massive scaffoldings and netting (to keep bits and pieces from falling to the sidewalk), giving it a dark, formidable appearance. Once inside it is very grand, well worth the obstacle course.
For budget vacationers, Hungary is the new “Old Spain” for cheap digs. Would you believe less than $10 a night for B&Bs;? Book at the Ibusz office at the Keleti Pu (east) rail station in Budapest. Mini-market and deli shops (some are open 24 hours) provide the fixings for hearty meals. Warning: Beware of street money-changers. They are rip-offs.
