Waldorf Remembered

The article by Judith Morgan (“Cole Porter’s Former Hotel Might Be Called ‘The Top,”’ Sept. 22) about the Waldorf Towers brought back some very fond memories.
About eight years ago, my husband and I were booked to go on a trip to New England for the fall colors. As the tour left from the Waldorf-Astoria quite early in the morning, we decided to splurge and spend the night before at the Waldorf. Due to a mix-up, when the bell captain took us to our room, we surprised a very pretty young woman dressing for dinner. (Yes, even at the Waldorf, such mistakes happen.) The manager was so embarrassed, he gave us a room in the Towers. It was an event, as far as I was concerned.
The elevator operator was a man of about 79 who said he had spent most of his life working at the Waldorf and regaled us with stories about some of the famous guests as we rode up to the 36th floor. Needless to say, it was one of the highlights of our trip, and we have never forgotten the feeling of being very special guests on our first trip to New York City.
