When Cerritos Valley Christian beat Whittier Christian, 9-0, in an Olympic League football game Friday, it marked only the second time the Heralds had been shut out in a 43-game span since 1987.
Now, here’s the trivia question: Which team held Whittier Christian scoreless back then?
If you said Cerritos Valley Christian, you’re . . . correct. The Crusaders defeated Whittier Christian, 3-0, in overtime that year. In fact, Valley Christian has registered the only four shutouts of Whittier Christian teams since 1980. The Crusaders did it in 1985 (42-0), 1986 (28-0), 1987 and last week.
The closest Whittier Christian had come to being whitewashed after 1987 and before Friday was in a 25-7 playoff loss to Desert in 1988.
Whittier Christian defeated Valley Christian in 1989 (21-18) and 1990 (33-28).
