Police released recordings of frantic phone calls reporting a “man shooting up the place” at a Luby’s Cafeteria in Killeen, Tex., that became the site of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. The first call came from an unidentified caller who said: “There’s a man on the loose.” George Hennard had just rammed his blue pickup truck through a cafeteria window and began shooting patrons. He eventually killed 23 people before committing suicide. About 12 minutes after the call, an officer called the Killeen police dispatcher and said: “The suspect is dead. Shot himself in the head. . . . We’re going to need a lot of help in here, guys.” Officials also released preliminary autopsy reports on 22 of Hennard’s victims. All died of gunshot wounds, 10 from single shots to the head.
