NATION IN BRIEF : GEORGIA : 1 in 3 Women of Fertile Age Smokes

Nearly one in three women of reproductive age smokes, running a risk of miscarriage, sudden infant death or premature birth if she decides to have children, U.S. health officials reported. The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta said a 39-state survey found a median of 30% of women from age 18 to 44 were smokers. ranging from 21% in Texas to 37% in Wisconsin. And while 44% of the smokers said they had tried to quit in the previous year, they were still heavy smokers: 59% smoked more than 15 cigarettes a day.
