Family Feeling Hounded in Basset Case

LOS OSOS, Calif. — A family plans to appeal a judge’s order that their three basset hounds may bark only once an hour, for no more than two minutes at a time and not at all between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.
The order restricting the barking of Buddy, Missy and Precious was recently issued after a neighbor complained about the dogs.
“We’re trying to keep ‘em quiet,” David Smith, 21, said Wednesday.
Smith said his parents, Bruce and Brigitte Howey, intend to challenge the ruling by San Luis Obispo Municipal Court Judge Donald Umhofer.
The family has had the basset hounds for several years, Smith said.
The family’s home is on a busy street with lots of pedestrians, and there are neighboring dogs and cats. “The dogs are going to bark when they see things like that,” Smith said.
He added, however, that the dogs tend to bark when no one is home, so the family is making sure someone keeps the dogs company all the time.
