Dodgers Start on Upbeat Note at Workout

Darryl Strawberry, critical of the Dodgers’ chemistry when the 1991 season ended, praised Executive Vice President Fred Claire for the new mix of veteran and young players as the Dodgers began three-a-week workouts at Dodger Stadium Wednesday.

“It’s time for the young players to play, to gain experience,” Strawberry said of shortstop Jose Offerman, third baseman Dave Hansen, first baseman Erik Karros and catcher Carlos Hernandez.

“I mean, we have a veteran outfield to take the pressure off the kids on the infield, and a veteran catcher (Mike Scioscia) to handle the pitching staff. Fred has done a great job putting it together.”

Illustrative of the new chemistry was Eric Davis’ willingness to let Strawberry keep his No. 44, which Davis wore in Cincinnati, and switch to 33.

“I’m relinquishing all ties to the Reds,” Davis said. “I’m in blue now.”
