Special police task forces, similar to the one that has reduced crime in Hillcrest and North Park over the past month, will now be implemented in eight other neighborhoods in southern, central and southeastern San Diego, police said Thursday.
Six task forces, each composed of 10 officers, will be assigned indefinitely to high crime areas over the next three months, Assistant Police Chief Norm Stamper said. Two such forces are already at work in City Heights and Linda Vista.
Police have made 29 felony arrests in Hillcrest and North Park since the North Park-Hillcrest task force was formed Dec. 16, 1991, said Western Division Capt. Winston Yetta, who oversees the task force and the community patrol’s 200 volunteers. Six arrests were for robbery, four for assault with a deadly weapon, six for auto theft and 13 miscellaneous felony arrests for narcotics and warrants.
Yetta said that, since the task force was formed in December, there have been only five reported street crimes in Hillcrest and North Park, and suspects are in custody in three of the five cases.
