DAVIS CUP ROUNDUP : Brazil Eliminates Germany; Sweden Outlasts Canada

Brazil scored a stunning 3-1 Davis Cup victory over Germany when Jaime Oncins beat Markus Zoecke, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 7-5, Sunday at Rio de Janeiro.

Zoecke, who squandered a match point in the fifth set, was a replacement for Boris Becker, who withdrew because of intestinal problems and exhaustion after matches Friday and Saturday.

“This was an important title,” Oncins said. “I don’t even know how to describe what I’m feeling.”

Oncins’ 5 1/2-hour victory gave Brazil a spot in the quarterfinals against Italy. The meaningless final match was canceled.

The United States completed a 5-0 sweep of Argentina when Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi scored straight-set victories in the shortened reverse singles matches on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii.

Sampras rolled past Alberto Mancini, 6-4, 6-1, and Agassi downed Martin Jaite, 7-5, 6-3, but all the talk afterward was about when second-ranked Jim Courier will join the U.S. team.

“If Jim wants to play, he’ll be picked over me,” Sampras said.

U.S. captain Tom Gorman was not ready to announce his team for the quarterfinals against Czechoslovakia in Florida March 27-29.

But he did say: “I definitely think the No. 2 player in the world will be a part of the 1992 team.”

Magnus Gustafsson rallied to beat 19-year-old Daniel Nestor, 6-4, 2-6, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, and move Sweden into a meeting with Australia in the semifinals by beating Canada, 3-2, at Vancouver.

Top-ranked Stefan Edberg, upset by Nestor on Friday, beat Grant Connell, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), earlier to force the decisive fifth match.

Omar Camporese beat eighth-ranked Emilio Sanchez, 6-0, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch Italy’s 4-1 upset of Spain at Bolzano, Italy.
