San Diego police were looking for a robber who apparently shot himself Tuesday night after holding up a jewelry story at Mission Valley Center.
Witnesses told police that two men walked into the Diamond Designs store at 8:26 p.m. and ordered everyone to lie on the floor. As an unarmed accomplice stood watch at the door, the gunman ransacked the display cases, taking about $200,000 worth of jewelry, Police Sgt. Richard Nemetz said.
The witnesses said that, as the robbers fled the store, they heard a gunshot. Police found a blood trail outside the store and followed it to the parking lot. Investigators believe the gunman may have accidentally shot himself as he was leaving the store, Nemetz said.
The robbers reportedly fled in a light-blue pickup truck. Police notified hospitals to alert them if a gunshot victim had come in seeking treatment.
