PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Capistrano Valley Tops El Toro in Final Minutes
- Share via
Jason Faulk of Capistrano Valley relied on his instinct in a South Coast League boys’ soccer match Friday, helping the Cougars to a 2-1 victory over El Toro at Capistrano Valley High School.
With two minutes remaining in the match, Faulk, a senior midfielder, scored his 15th goal of the season for Capistrano Valley (17-3-3, 5-1-2 in league) on an assist from Jeff Rynders. The goal came after a throw-in by a Capistrano Valley player bounced off the Cougars’ Brooke Humphrey, went to Rynders and then was kicked in by Faulk from about five yards out.
“The ball deflected a couple of times,” Faulk said. “My first instinct was to bicycle (kick) it. I figured if I could get it in there, I’d score because I knew where the goalkeeper was--behind me.”
The victory moves Capistrano Valley, ranked fourth in Orange County, into first place in league with two games remaining in the regular season.
Tenth-ranked El Toro (10-5-3, 5-2-1) is second.
El Toro’s Brian Riggs scored on a free kick with three minutes left in the first half to tie the score, 1-1.
