PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Troy Forces Sunny Hills to Dance to Its Tune

Troy’s 10-hit attack forced Sunny Hills to use four pitchers and prompted excerpts of Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” over the public address system each time a Lancer pitcher was replaced Wednesday during the Warriors’ 9-5 victory in a Freeway League baseball game at Troy High.

The first Sunny Hills pitcher to face the music was Brian Volpp, who faced only six batters before being removed. Troy (7-11, 5-4 in league) started the first inning with three hits, including an RBI double by Brent Coon.

After a one-out double by Rich Richey drove in two more runs, Bob Sunderland relieved Volpp and worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam with two strikeouts.

But Sunderland wasn’t immune from the Warriors’ attack. After Sunny Hills (10-11, 5-5) took a 4-3 lead in the top of the third on an RBI double by Steve Ashton and Erren O’Leary’s two-run homer, Troy rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 6-4.

A leadoff double by Brent Lacher, a walk, two wild pitches and a two-base throwing error by shortstop Brent Howes led to Brian Dewispelaere replacing Sunderland.

Troy had the music playing again in the sixth when Dewispelaere gave up a walk and a single to open the inning. Jeremy Jones came on in relief and promptly gave up a three-run homer to Coon, his sixth of the season, which ties him for the county lead.
