Council Bats Over .400 on Freeway

The San Diego City Council has voted to rename a portion of California 56 after former baseball great and San Diego native Ted Williams.
The council voted, 7 to 1, Tuesday to rename the proposed freeway for Williams, the last major leaguer to bat .400.
Councilwoman Abbie Wolfsheimer had wanted the section of roadway named after Gov. Pete Wilson, a former San Diego mayor. “I consider heroes to be people who exhibit great brains and not great brawn,” she said.
Williams, who now lives in Florida, played for Hoover High School in San Diego and the Pacific Coast League Padres in the 1930s before joining the Boston Red Sox. While with the Red Sox, Williams led the American League in hitting six times. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.
