SANTA CLARITA : Consultant Hired to Study Garbage Rates
- Share via
The Santa Clarita City Council has voted to pay a consultant $37,500 to study the city’s garbage collection rate structure and recommend new fees to reflect the higher price to use Chiquita Canyon Landfill.
The council voted unanimously Tuesday to hire the consulting firm of Hilton, Frankopf & Hobson of Fremont, Calif., to recommend the most equitable rate system for residents and businesses and to evaluate whether the franchise fees the city charges garbage haulers are fair.
The consultant would also study how residential rates would be affected if the city decided to haul garbage by rail to remote landfills.
The study was prompted by a request from the city’s three trash haulers to increase their rates to reflect new landfill fees at Chiquita Canyon of $28.89 per ton, up from the previous rate of $24.45 per ton. The monthly garbage collection fee for single-family homes is now $17.81.
