Top Foe of Mafia Dies in Italian Bomb Blast

PALERMO, Sicily — Italy’s top anti-Mafia crusader, his wife and at least three other people were killed Saturday when explosives allegedly planted by the Mafia blew up their convoy, police said. At least nine people were injured.
Giovanni Falcone had led a corps of fellow magistrates handling the nation’s most delicate Mafia probes. He was hailed nationwide for his courage and was considered the leading expert on the Mafia.
