FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Anne Mall of Laguna Niguel defeated Stacey Jellen of Calabasas, 6-2, 6-3, Monday in the Southern California girls’ 18 sectional championship at Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley.
Mall, 17, who played at UCLA this year, had little trouble with third-seeded Jellen. Mall broke serve six times in the match and used accurate passing shots when Jellen came to the net.
The sectionals play a large factor in the upcoming SCTA rankings, which determine which players advance to the USTA junior nationals. The top eight ranked players, of which Mall and Jellen are expected to be included, advance to the nationals at San Jose in August.
Mall was unseeded in the sectionals because her college commitments prevented her from playing enough junior tournaments to qualify for a top-eight ranking.
In the boys’ 16 final, top-seeded Cecil Mamitt of Los Angeles defeated third-seeded Jakub Pietrowski of Huntington Beach, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Two other county players won age-group titles. Geoff Abrams of Newport Beach defeated Bob Bryan of Camarillo, 6-0, 6-1, to win the boys’ 14 singles title. Abrams, the top seed, didn’t lose a set in five matches during the tournament. Kristina Triska of Mission Viejo defeated Jessica Kessler of Studio City, 6-2, 6-2, to win the girls’ 14 singles title.
