Oldest Delegate Sees Clearly Into the Future

Associated Press

Young leaders and the future are on delegate Jeanette Riel’s mind at the Republican National Convention.

Riel, 89, a longtime Republican volunteer from Vero Beach, Fla., is the senior delegate here, beating Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina by more than two months, according to surveys of each state delegation. She will turn 90 on Sept. 27.

“We need young people to come up through the ranks. I’d like to see people who will have the vision to lead us,” Riel said. “We have to work with the young people. Older people often have preconceived notions, and we need to listen to the young.”
