PREP PREVIEW ’92 / WATER POLO : EL TORO
Coach: Don Stoll (12th year).
1991: 16-10, 2-3 in league; missed playoffs for second time since 1981; finished fourth in South Coast League.
Key returners: Daniel Mathot, Sr., All-Division 4-A first team; Daniel Julson, Sr.; Jason Murray, Sr, goalkeeper; John Simmons, Sr.; Brandon Stout, Jr.; Brent Stoll, Jr.; Matt Tilton, Jr.; Scott Varho, Sr.
Key newcomers: Jay Reaves, Jr.; Dion Hice, Sr.; Brad Bracha, Sr.
Outlook: After the ignominy of missing the playoffs as a defending champion last season, the Chargers have plenty of motivation this year. They also have virtually their entire team back. Only two players, who accounted for only 13 goals between them, graduated. Two-meter man Mathot is the main scoring threat--he should easily break brother J.P.’s school career scoring record--but El Toro’s strength is balance. The team powered through its summer league schedule, losing only three matches to all-star teams when the entire team was there. El Toro is ranked No. 1 in the preseason Division I poll. “This is our deepest team, but we’re still untested,” Stoll said.
