CHATSWORTH / VAN NUYS : State to Plant Trees at Metrolink Stops

The California Transportation Commission has voted to spend $318,000 to plant trees at five Metrolink stations, including 350 trees at the Chatsworth station and 60 at the Van Nuys station.
Metrolink is a commuter rail service that will start Oct. 26 and link Moorpark, Santa Clarita and Pomona to downtown Los Angeles, with 13 stops along the three lines.
The tree-planting funds approved last week come from the Environmental Enhancement and Mitigation Demonstration Program created by Proposition 111, the gasoline tax approved by voters in 1990. The program provides $10 million annually for 10 years to fund environmental projects related to transportation.
The money will be used to plant almost 1,000 trees at Metrolink stations in Claremont, Covina, Chatsworth, Van Nuys and Pomona. A total of $140,000 will be spent for tree planting at the Chatsworth on Devonshire Street west of Canoga Avenue and the Van Nuys station next to the closed General Motors plant on Van Nuys Boulevard.
