A key congressional committee has approved nearly $1 million for the Casa Pacifica home for abused children as part of an appropriations bill that is expected to be adopted.
The funding, included in appropriations for the Housing and Urban Development budget, will be added to the $7.5 million already committed from public and private sources to build the abused children center.
Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley), who requested the $960,000, said the funds are targeted for road improvements and equipment at the 22-acre facility in Camarillo, where site improvement is now under way.
“I am extremely pleased that this funding has been approved, because this project is so desperately needed in Ventura County,” Gallegly said.
When completed, Casa Pacifica will provide residential and outpatient care for up to 300 children a year who are removed from their families because of physical or sexual abuse, severe neglect or abandonment.
The federal dollars are contained in the final version of an appropriations bill worked out by a joint Senate and House committee. The bill now goes back to the House and Senate for final approval before being sent to President Bush for his signature.
