SANTA CLARITA : City Honored for Pedestrian Safety

Santa Clarita has been honored for pedestrian safety by the American Automobile Assn.
The city’s 1991 record of no pedestrian fatalities and 22 injuries reflects a safety performance better than the national average for 78 cities with populations between 100,000 and 200,000 that participated in a nationwide program. The program was coordinated locally by the Automobile Club of Southern California.
The national average for those cities, said Kelly Clark, manager of the auto club’s Santa Clarita district office, was two fatalities and 60 injuries.
Organizers of the program, now in its 53rd year, also evaluate factors such as quality of school traffic-safety programs, maintenance of accident records, safety legislation, enforcement, traffic engineering and active public information and education programs.
In recognition of Santa Clarita’s performance, Clark presented a citation to Mayor Jill Klajic this week at a City Council meeting.
