CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : GLEN AVON : Deputy Wounds Man Watering Lawn
- Share via
A man watering his lawn at 3 a.m. while wearing two guns and a bulletproof vest was wounded by a sheriff’s deputy who stopped to investigate, authorities said. Michael Marmolejo, 64, suffered a hip wound and was in fair condition at Riverside General Hospital. Family and friends said a second shot hit him in the chest, which was protected by the vest. A Riverside County sheriff’s spokesman said Marmolejo was shot because he pulled a gun on the deputy, an eight-year veteran. Marmolejo’s daughter Theresa said her father often checks on his upholstery shop--next door to the family’s home--early in the morning. Theresa Marmolejo, who said her father sometimes waters the lawn after checking on the shop, said he was armed to protect himself from crime.
