The best songs have enough musical personality to overshadow Merchant’s doggedly determined meaning-of-life lyrics: “Noah’s Dove,” which sounds like something out of “Dr. Zhivago,” and the horn-gilded “Far and Few Between” and “Candy Everybody Wants.”
