Newport Beach Residents Don’t Deserve ‘Bad Rap’ From the Media

Regarding “Newport Chief’s Conduct Is Coming Under Scrutiny” (Nov. 7): Being a public official, Police Chief Arb Campbell cannot escape the media attention generated by the mutiny going on in his department currently. But how in the world do you justify dragging Bill Voit into this labor dispute?
I have known Bill for more than 20 years and am proud to call him a friend. All of the behavior you describe with regard to generosity toward his friends is totally consistent with the Bill Voit I know. He is loyal, caring and totally without ulterior motives in his generosity. He is a patriotic American, a Christian gentleman, and a very successful businessman. What has Bill done that justifies your printing his picture and questioning his relationship with anyone?
I can’t imagine what rankles anyone about Bill’s relationship with Chief Campbell, unless it comes from that kind of ugly elitism that suggests that it is improper for a public servant to be fraternizing with someone as wealthy as Bill. I hope we haven’t sunk to that kind of attitude in Orange County.
You do a disservice to a very fine man by dragging Bill Voit into this story. All his friends would tell you that this is the real Bill Voit: no ulterior motives, no hidden agendas, no justification for being in the story.
