Opera Commission: Jazz singer Bobby McFerrin (“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”) has been commissioned by the San Francisco Opera to compose an opera. The opera will focus on the story of the arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and will be told from the point of view of Mary Magdalene. It’s slated for the 1995 season and will include a libretto by Oakland novelist and essayist Ishmael Reed.
