COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NATION : Alabama, Texas A&M; Have Games Today

Two top 10 teams will conclude regular-season play today with intrastate-rivalry games against unranked opponents.

Second-ranked Alabama (10-0) will play Auburn at Legion Field in Birmingham. The Tigers are 5-4-1 and may be inspired by the resignation of Coach Pat Dye, announced Wednesday night.

Alabama will play Florida on Dec. 5 at Birmingham in the inaugural Southeastern Conference championship game. If victorious, and if top-ranked Miami defeats San Diego State on Saturday, the Crimson Tide will play the Hurricanes for the national championship in the Sugar Bowl.

The other game pits No. 4 Texas A&M; against Texas at Austin.

The Aggies (11-0), too, hope to emerge with a better chance to contend for a national championship bowl matchup. Texas A&M;, Miami (10-0) and Alabama are the only unbeaten, untied teams.

“If Alabama and Miami keep winning, they should play each other for the title,” Aggie Coach R.C. Slocum said. “But I hope the pollsters make certain that two of the three unbeaten teams end up playing for it.”

Florida State (9-1) is ranked No. 3.

The Aggies, who will play host to the Cotton Bowl, have won seven of their last eight games against Texas (6-4). There is a chance that they would play host to an unbeaten Miami team for the national championship, should Alabama lose one of its final two games.
