While the New York Yankees were making and withdrawing multimillion-dollar offers to free agents Doug Drabek and Jose Guzman, former Pittsburgh Pirates Gary Varsho and Cecil Espy signed with the Cincinnati Reds. And Mark Gubicza, a 30-year-old right-hander, re-signed with the Kansas City Royals, agreeing to a $1.25-million, one-year deal. Varsho and Espy, released this week by the Pittsburgh Pirates, agreed to $400,000 deals with the Reds.
