SAN DIEGO — Brendan Heffernan of North Hunterdon High in Glen Gardner, N.J., singled himself out from a pack of eight runners with just more than a half-mile to go in Saturday’s Kinney Cross-Country Championships at Morley Field and recorded a first-place time of 15:13.4 over the five-kilometer course.
His national title was revenge after falling from second place at the same point of the race in 1991 to 10th place at the end.
“I made my move right before we got to the (Upas Street) hill,” Heffernan said. “That’s where I fell apart last year. I really, really had to work hard on that.”
